Before & After

Am I a good candidate for PRP hair restoration?

PRP hair restoration is a highly advanced, minimally invasive regeneration treatment with years of scientific research to back it up. PRP injections into the scalp is well documented as a method to restore the health of the hair without surgery, medications, or chemical treatments. The ideal candidates for PRP hair restoration in Boston still have functioning hair follicles that have begun to produce finer, thinner hair strands. PRP cannot typically restore hair growth in balding areas.

How does PRP hair restoration work?

For thinning hair or excessive shedding, PRP hair restoration restores the health of dying hair follicles. The growth factors in platelet rich plasma (PRP) are delivered via injection to the scalp to stimulate the rejuvenating, healing response. With several treatments over several months, hair follicles can be restored, able to produce thicker, stronger, healthier hair.

During your PRP hair restoration treatment in Boston at Nirvana Medical Aesthetics, a small amount of your blood is collected and treated to extract the platelets – the part of the blood that contains four to eight times more healing and growth factors.

For exceptional PRP hair restoration results, Dr. Biswas often combines PRP injections with microneedling (in which tiny, controlled micro-injuries are made in the affected area of the scalp) to provide channels through which the PRP flows and to increase circulation to enhance the health of the hair follicles even more.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND PRP HAIR RESTORATION

According to research, PRP hair restoration produces real-world results. Within two weeks following a PRP treatment, test subjects appeared to have “increased epidermal thickness, number of new hair follicles and keratinocytes (cells which produce keratin).” There was also a considerable increase in vascular formation (small blood vessels) at the treatment site compared to the baseline subjects. Clinicians observed that PRP therapy can promote natural hair growth, increase hair counts, and thickness by boosting the blood supply to the hair follicles. The same clinical study also noted that no complications occurred in any study participants.

FAQs

PRP hair restoration treatment involves using your own blood platelets to stimulate hair follicles that are producing finer, thinner hair strands, or have stopped producing hair. This regenerative technique has shown to be highly effective at slowing hair loss triggering the growth of thicker, stronger, healthier hair.

The number of PRP sessions needed to achieve optimal results will be determined by the condition of your hair. Initially, we may recommend starting with several treatments spaced four weeks apart. After that, you will be required to have additional treatments two to three times per year to maintain hair health.

The entire procedure typically requires about 30 minutes. Harnessing the PRP only takes 10 to 15 minutes (including drawing and processing blood). The PRP treatment itself can take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes. You may need a combination of PRP injections and microneedling to achieve the ideal results.

The results of PRP hair restoration vary from person to person. There is some noticeable improvement several weeks after each PRP treatment, with full results appearing within 6 to 12 months.

If you have dormant hair follicles, PRP can restore the follicles, so they produce thicker, fuller, healthier hair strands. The growth hormones in the patient’s blood platelets stimulate the dying or inactive hair follicles. After several treatments, PRP therapy improves the blood supply and nutrient delivery, necessary for healthy hair.

Since PRP involves injections, you may experience some minor discomfort. We will discuss all the treatment details and pain-relief options to ensure your comfort during the procedure.
